Became the first African American member of the BBWAA

- This award improved his legitimacy and helped spread the desegregation movement across america
- Being a member of this fraternity, Smith was given jobs as a sports writer all across the country, contributing to the eventual desegregation of baseball and the civil rights movement as a whole.
